How to check if laptop supports 2.4 or 5 GHz WiFi

netsh wlan show drivers

2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz are both bandwidths used in a wireless WiFi connection. The 2.4 Ghz wireless connection is good if you want to bridge large distances and the 5 Ghz wireless connection is good for a fast connection, which leads to a faster wireless WiFi connection.

However, not all laptops support the 5 Ghz wireless WiFi connection.

In this article, I will explain how to check whether the wireless network adapter connected to your laptop supports 2.4 Ghz, 5 Ghz or both.

Check whether laptop supports 2.4 or 5 GHz WiFi

To perform this check we will use the Command Prompt.

In the Windows search field type: Command Prompt. Right-click on the Command Prompt result and choose Run as Administrator.

Open command prompt windows

In the Command Prompt type the following command:

netsh wlan show drivers

netsh wlan show drivers

In the result you will see the radio types supported by the wireless WiFi adapter. Below you can see what these radio types mean.

If the radio type result shows 802.11g and 802.11n, then your laptop only supports 2.4 GHz.

If it shows 802.11n, 802.11g, and 802.11b, then your laptop only supports 2.4 GHz.

If a set of radio types also includes 802.11a or 802.11ac, then your computer supports 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz bandwidth is also supported, there are few wireless WiFi adapters that only support 5 GHz.

It is important that if you want to use 5 GHz, you also have a router that supports 5 GHz. If the router supports single 2.4 Ghz, the laptop will only connect via 2.4 Ghz.

Most routers support both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. I recommend that you use a 5 Ghz wireless connection as a wireless WiFi home network for the optimal fast wireless internet connection.
