android adware

In this instruction I will explain to you step by step how to remove adware from your Android phone or tablet.

It is common knowledge that Windows computers can become infected with adware. Just like with Windows, cyber criminals are increasingly targeting operating systems that are often purchased by users, including more and more Android devices.

Since 2018 we have been seeing more and more adware for Android. This is because the control over applications in the Google Play store still leaves much to be desired. The check for malicious applications in the Google Play store is downright poor. This makes it attractive for adware developers to distribute adware applications via the Google Play Store and thereby infect Android devices.

If your Android device, Android phone or Android tablet is infected with adware, you will immediately notice a few problems.

Unwanted advertisements are shown. Your Android device slows down and your personal data may be stolen. However, cybercriminals usually abuse Android for advertising purposes. The Google Chrome browser is then redirected through some advertising networks and then ends up on a scam website that tries to sell you a product or get you to install adware.

Whatever you experience on your Android device, in this instruction I will explain how to remove Android adware step by step.

Remove Adware from Android

First of all, you need to start your phone or tablet in Android safe mode. Doing this will load only the default applications and settings. Safe mode gives us the chance to delete apps and settings.

Boot Android into safe mode

  1. Long press the power button to wait until power off appears.
  2. Tap and hold the Power button until Safe Mode appears.
  3. Tap Safe Mode
  4. Your Android or Phone will now load in Android Safe mode. You will notice that the device is in safe mode when “Safe Mode” is visible at the bottom of the screen.

Remove administrator applications

Adware applications on Android abuse the privilege of administrator applications to prevent users from removing unwanted apps from their devices. In this step I will show you how to uninstall applications that force administrative privilege and prevent you from uninstalling the app.

  1. Go to the settings
  2. Go to admin apps
  3. Go to the search in Android and type device management apps
  4. Click on the right side of the app where you want to remove the admin profile, toggle the switch to off.

Remove adware application

After removing the admin profile, you need to remove the adware application from your Android phone or tablet. If you are not sure which app is responsible, the next step is to clean your Android device with Malwarebytes to scan.

  1. Go to the settings on your Android device
  2. Press Applications, scroll through the list to identify unknown applications.
  3. Tap the App you want to delete. First force close the app and then delete it.
  4. Restart your Android device

After performing the steps as described in this instruction, you should boot your device in normal mode, so exit Safe Mode.

  1. Press and hold the power button on your device.
  2. Select restart from the menu.

Your device will now restart into Android without Safe Mode.

Remove Android adware with Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes is able to remove adware from your phone or tablet. Malwarebytes is 100% free for Android. I recommend scanning your Android device with Malwarebytes even if you are not sure if your device is infected.

Delete application data

Adware leaves traces and changes browser settings. To successfully remove adware from your Android device, I recommend that you clear the application data within Android. Clearing application data will reset the browser and erase the site data and temporary files.

  1. Open the settings on your Android device.
  2. Tap on applications, this will list all installed apps.
  3. Tap the web browser you are using, for example Chrome, Firefox, etc.
  4. Press Storage
  5. Tap Manage Storage
  6. Press Clear All Data

It is easy to remove adware apps from your Android phone or Android tablet. Have fun with your clean Android device!

    1. Hello, DoubleClick is not a virus, malware or unwanted. DoubleClick is part of Google's advertising network. So you cannot remove it, but you can block it by installing an Adblocker.
      Success!

      1. Yes, I sent it a little too quickly, I only saw your response to Hansje later... Unfortunately it doesn't work on Chrome, what I did notice is that they are sponsored ads, for example I search via Google for hema, the top one is sponsored and leads To double click net, I scroll through and end up on Hema. Thank you!!

  1. I have a Motorola G6. I have had Ad.doubleclick.net on my mobile for a few months now. I've tried everything to block/delete this. I have reset my mobile phone to factory settings twice, but the malware keeps coming back. I have installed CCleaner (free version), Norton 2 (paid version), Duck Duck Go, Malwarebytes premium, but with every scan I always get the same answer: no malware found. I assume that all apps on my mobile are free of malware because I have had these apps for years. I have also reset it to Safe Mode several times and deleted various apps, but the result is zero. I also ran various free anti-virus programs on it, but couldn't get rid of it. What can I do now?

    1. Hello Hans, that may be correct. Doubleclick.net is not malware. The doubleclick network is part of Google Ads (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2012/apr/23/doubleclick-tracking-trackers-cookies-web-monitoring), or Google ads, and these are completely legal. On the internet you may find a lot of “removal guides” or uninstall guides, but this is all nonsense. The only thing you can do to block these ads is to install an ad blocker like AdGuard: https://adguard.com/nl/welcome.html
      Good luck! Greetings, Stefan

      1. Thank you very much Stefan, I have installed Samsung Internet and the adblocker and it is helping so far.
