Windows 10 users now have a News and Interests taskbar widget. The News & Interests widget was initially expected with the feature update that Microsoft plans for fall 2021. However, the widget is now slowly rolling out for Windows 10 version 1909 and higher releases, including version 2004, 20H2, and 21H1.
News and Interests gives the user quick access to an overview. The News and Interests overview offers us the current news, the current weather overview, an overview with the latest stock market information, related news and a traffic overview based on your location.
You can fully customize the News and interests overview to your wishes. However, it is not possible to edit the latest news. You can “like” certain news messages so that you see more of these types of news messages. The news in the News and interests widget will then be adapted to your wishes. You can adjust all the other parts to your wishes. This is how it works.
Customize news and interests
As mentioned, there are a number of sections in News & Interests that you can adjust. For example, you can adjust the weather location, adjust the temperature unit, adjust the weather overview, adjust your personal news information and the location that displays current traffic.
Adjust location
To adjust the weather location in the News and Interests widget, click on the News and Interests widget. In the current weather information, click on the three dots (more options), then click on edit location.
A new browser window will now open where you can enter the can set location.
Adjust temperature unit
In the Netherlands, the default temperature unit in the news and interests widget is displayed in the Celsius unit. However, you can easily change this to Fahrenheit. Open the news and interests widget and click on the C or F on the weather to easily change the temperature unit.
Customize news and interests weather widget in the taskbar
News & Interests is displayed in the taskbar by default in Windows 10. You will then see the current weather in the taskbar. You can adjust this current weather. You can change the News & Interests taskbar settings to just an icon, both an icon and text or you can change the Remove news and interests widget.
You can adjust these News and Interests settings by right-clicking on the taskbar. In the taskbar menu, click News & Interests and then click your desired taskbar setting.
If you do not want to see the current weather in the News and interests overview, click on the three dots in the weather widget and click on Hide weather map.
Customize news and interests to your liking
You can customize the interests displayed in the News & Interests widget. So you can enable or disable certain interests based on subject. You will then only see relevant news that you have set by topic.
Open the News & Interests widget. At the top, click Manage interests.
A new browser window will now open where you can set the interest you would like to see in the News & Interests widget. Once you have set up the news, click the refresh icon in the News & Interests widget, next to the Manage Interests button. The news is then adapted to your interests.
If there is news you want to see more of, or you want to share this news with other people, click on the three horizontal dots in the news widget. You will then see a number of options to adjust the current news overview.
You can share the news article, save it for later, indicate that you want to see more or less of these types of articles, hide the article, hide only articles from a specific news site or report a problem.
News and interests adjust traffic information
The News & Interests widget in Windows 10 also displays current traffic information in your region. If you prefer to set a different location, you can do this as follows. You will then only see the traffic information from the region you have set.
Open the News & Interests widget. In the traffic information card, click on the three horizontal dots in the top right corner for the more options menu. You will then see three options, namely edit the location, hide the traffic map and more settings.
If you click Edit Location, a window will open where you can set the location.
The more settings option takes you to the msn.com website where you can change general News and interests settings.
News and interests adjust language and content
In Windows 10, the language of the News & Interests widget is displayed based on the language in which Windows is installed. If you want to change the language of the News & Interests widget, you can do this in the following way.
Open the News & Interests widget. Click on the three horizontal dots at the very top to open the more settings menu. Click on Language and content in the News and interests menu. A new browser window will now open where you can change the language and content.
You can also enable or disable certain information cards here by toggling the blue slider at the bottom. Click on the information card settings on the left in the menu to change even more information card settings.
I hope this helped you. Thank you for reading!
I selected “Hide traffic map” in the Traffic widget, but I can't find a way to make it visible again. This works with the weather and financial widgets. Do you have an idea?
Hello Frank, I have tested it and I am also encountering the same problem. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the update, this also does not solve the problem. It seems like this is yet another bug with this feature. If you find something yourself, would you please report it on this website by responding to this message? Greetings, Stefan.
Hello Stefan, thank you, it is nice that my findings are confirmed. I think MS added the traffic info at the last minute... If I find anything else I will let you know. Greetings, Frank
I came up with a workaround: click on manage interests, select personal settings, change the language to United States English, scroll down, then you will see the button traffic show traffic card in my feed, enable this and refresh the widget. Then set the language back to Dutch and refresh the widget again. Greetings, Frank
Hello Hans, thank you for your addition. This helps people with the same problem, including myself 🙂
Greetings, Stefan
