Install local security policy in Windows home edition

The Local Security Policy (secpol.msc) in Windows 10 or Windows 11 contains important information about the security of a local computer.

However, Secpol is not part of the Windows Home edition. When you try to access the Local Security Policy in Windows Home, you get an error saying secpol.msc cannot be found.

Computer administrators mainly use it to manage and change various security parameters of the computer. If you install secpol.msc you will also get access to it gpedit.msc.

Install Secpol.msc in Windows 10 or Windows 11 home

Right-click on the start button. Click Run in the menu. In the run window type: notepad.exe. Open Notepad.

In the Notepad window copy and paste the following text:

@echo off pushd "%~dp0" dir /b %SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~3*.mum >List.txt dir /b %SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~3*.mum >>List.txt for /f %%i in ('findstr /i . List.txt 2^>nul') do dism /online /norestart /add-package:"%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\%%i" pause

Click file and click Save As.

Change “Save As” to “All Files (*.*)”. Give it a clear file name with extension .bat, for example “Install Secpol.bat”. Click Save.

Go to the folder where you saved the file. Right-click on the .bat file you just created. Click on “Run as Administrator”. Accept the prompt to run the file.

The local security policy (secpol) is now added by the “Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool” in Windows home edition. This won't take long. Check if secpol has been installed successfully. Then close the window.
