Customize the new tab page in the Microsoft browser

When you open the Microsoft Edge browser, the default new tab page will be displayed if you have not set any other preferences.

The new tab page in the Edge browser offers you direct insight into the current weather, there is a search bar to search directly via Bing and various current news is shown.

You can fully customize the new tab page to your liking. You can set your own image, hide the content, set a specific theme and more.

In this article I will explain to you how you can completely customize the new tab page of the Microsoft Edge browser to your liking.

Customize the new tab page in the Microsoft Edge browser

To change the new tab page, open the Microsoft Edge browser. Then click on the gear icon in the top right corner.

Division

There are several layouts for the Microsoft Edge new tab page to choose from. Each layout provides a different experience for the new tab page.

The layouts you can choose from are featured, inspiring, informative and customized. If you want to customize the new tab page to your liking, select custom.

Region and language

The Microsoft Edge new tab page selects news and information based on the chosen region and language. If you wish to see news and information from another region in a different language on the new tab page, select the desired region and language here.

Shortcuts

At the top of the new tab page you will see shortcuts. By default, this is 1 row with the most visited websites as a shortcut.

You can expand this row to 2 rows or disable it completely to no longer display shortcuts on the new tab page.

You can change each shortcut individually. You do this by moving the mouse over the shortcut. An additional menu button will then appear on the right side. Click on it to change the shortcut name. Delete the shortcut, pin it to a page, or pin it to the taskbar.

Background

The new tab in the Microsoft Edge browser provides a wallpaper of the day by default. Every day Microsoft selects a different background. If you have enabled the background of the day option, you will see this background in the new tab.

You can also adjust the background settings for the new tab. For example, you can remove the background by selecting “Off”, a blank background will then be displayed. You can also select the image of the day, an image or video of the day or set your own image as the background.

If you prefer to set the entire Microsoft Edge browser to a specific color or theme, choose “custom theme”.

Dynamic components such as the “greeting” are also added in the background. This is a small dynamic piece of text that shows your current location and the current weather in Dutch.

You can also enable or disable this greeting, just like a Office sidebar.

Content

Finally, you can change the content displayed on the new tab page. The content concerns the recent news, and the informative headlines with articles, current weather, and the traffic situation. This depends on the previously selected options as to what is displayed.

You can choose to display the content in four different ways. You can set the content to be visible, all content will then be immediately visible on the new tab page.

You can make the content partially visible. Then the content shifts down a few centimeters and the top is larger.

You can only make headings visible. All content then shifts further down until only the headings are visible such as Sports, my feed, etc

Or you can disable the content completely. No news will then be shown, but also no widgets such as the current traffic situation, the current weather and showbiz news will be shown.
