If you use the Microsoft Edge search engine in Windows 11 or Windows 10, Bing is the default search engine.
You can change the search engine in Microsoft Edge to a search engine of your choice, for example Google. All searches you perform via the address bar will then be opened in the set search engine.
The search engines that you can set in the Microsoft Edge browser are:
- Bing (This search engine is default).
- Yahoo
- DuckDuckGo
- YouTube
If you want, you can add search engines yourself. This article shows you how to change a search engine in Microsoft Edge. I also explain how you can add a search engine to Microsoft Edge yourself and how to replace the home page with a search engine.
Change search engine in Microsoft Edge
Change search engine via the address bar in Microsoft Edge
If you search via the address bar, a standard search engine is used. In the case of Microsoft Edge, this is the Bing search engine. You can change this search engine.
Open Microsoft Edge. Click on the menu icon in the top right corner. In the menu click on “settings”. On the left in the settings, click on “privacy, search and services”.
At the very bottom of the “Services” settings, click on “Address bar and search”.
Select the desired search engine from the “Search engine used in the address bar” list.
The search engine you set here replaces the search engine used when you enter a search query via the address bar.
Manage search programs
If you want to add a search engine that is not in the standard list of search engines, click on “Manage search engines”.
You can now add a search engine yourself by clicking on the “add” button.
You need a “name”, a “shortcut” and a URL with %s instead of a query. It may be easier to find and install a browser extension for the search engine in question. However, this entirely depends on whether an extension is available or not.
The great thing about Microsoft Edge is that it is based on “Chromium”. In this case, this means that an extension for Google Chrome can also be installed in Microsoft Edge.
Set search engine as homepage
If you are looking for how to set a search engine as your homepage in the Microsoft Edge browser, you have two options.
Either you change the homepage in Microsoft Edge to the URL of the search engine or you install a browser extension that replaces the homepage with a new tab that opens the search engine.
Change homepage to search engine
In the address bar type: edge://settings/startHomeNTP. Then enable the “Open these pages” option and click “Add a new page”.
Enter the URL of the search engine that you want to open as the homepage in the Microsoft Edge browser. If you restart Microsoft Edge, this search engine will now open as the homepage.
In this example, I have set Google as the homepage in the Microsoft Edge browser.
I hope this helped you. Thank you for reading!
