Windows 10 makes it easier than ever to determine where your downloaded applications and software are installed.
Now there's no reason to worry about moving all your apps to another internal drive, or even to a removable USB drive.

In case you need to create space on your primary hard drive, with just a few clicks of your mouse you can move the apps to the storage space that suits you best.

Change location where applications are installed in Windows 10

Not everyone knows that it is simple that the location where apps are installed does not always have to be the C drive. The majority of people, however, have the location for applications and files on the C drive by default. If you want to change the location of these files and applications to a different drive, read on.

Right-click on the Windows start button. Select System from the start menu.

Open the Storage settings on the left in the menu. In the More storage settings, click Change where new content is saved.

Select the drive, in the window where new apps are stored. Make sure your disk or partition is recognized by Windows.

Your new apps installed in Windows will now be installed on your chosen drive or partition. However, existing applications have not been moved yet, read on to learn how to move existing applications to the new drive or partition.

Move apps to another drive

It is important to know that if you move applications to an external drive such as a USB stick or other device connected to the computer, the apps will no longer be available if you disconnect the connection.

So pay close attention to where you move the apps.

Right-click on the Windows start button. Select Apps and features from the start menu.

Select the application from the list and click the move button. You can choose the location, such as D drive or other drive created by your media.

Please note: Not all apps can be moved, for example applications pre-installed by Microsoft and desktop apps.

If you see a “Change” button instead of a “Move” button, you have selected a traditional desktop app. You cannot move it from here. If you see a gray “Move” button, you've selected a Microsoft-provided app that came with Windows 10. You cannot move those apps either. You can only move apps that you installed from the Microsoft Store.

It is that simple to change existing applications to a different location. You can save space on the C drive by moving, but again please note that the application is only available if the new drive is also available.

  1. Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the answer, I gather from this that I have installed software on the PC in a different way, such as the MS Office package, for example, or various photo editing programs that I cannot move.
Uninstalling and reinstalling is then the only option??
Or are there other options to clean up the C drive so that only Windows is on it

I'd like to hear from you again

  2. Hi Stefan, I came to your site because I am looking for how to empty my full C drive, so that only Windows 10 remains on it and that all other installed programs are moved to a new larger SSD.

When I follow your steps to move applications, I don't see the “Move” option anywhere.
Is that due to my Windows version?

    I have Windows 10 Home version 21H1

Another option is to delete everything and reinstall everything, but that will take a while.
I hope you have a solution for me,

    Sincerely
    Erik

    1. Hello Erik, you can only use apps created from the Microsoft Store are installed. All other apps don't. Make sure the drive where you want to move the app is visible in Windows Explorer under “This PC”.
      Greetings, Stefan.
