Remove News button from the taskbar in Windows 11 or 10

Stefan

The “News & Interests” button in Windows 10 or the “Widgets” button in Windows 11 is a feature that was introduced in early 2021 in the Windows 10 taskbar. This button provides quick access to personalized news, weather and other information right from the taskbar.

When you click the News & Interests button, an additional menu appears on the taskbar with recent information, including news headlines, weather reports, and traffic information. You can customize this menu to show the information that is most relevant to you, such as sports scores, stock quotes and more.

Additionally, the News & Interests feature uses artificial intelligence to learn from your interactions and display more relevant information over time. You can also click on a story in the drop-down menu to open a browser window and read the full article.

If you do not use this button and want to remove it, this is possible in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. In this instruction you can read step by step how you can disable the news and interests or the widget button in the taskbar.

  1. I tried checking the right mouse button on the taskbar, then I see news and interest, it is turned off, checking it but nothing changes, can you help me?

    1. Hello, it depends what you expect to happen? If it is already set to “disable”, I think this is the intention, right? What exactly are you trying? I suspect you are trying to turn off news and interest. I tested it myself and it still works, try restarting the computer first while news and interests are disabled.

  2. Hi Stefan,
Disabling the News Feed from the taskbar works well, but can you really remove it? If I log in as a different user the news feed is back on the taskbar and that means, I guess, that the app has not been deleted and that "news" and weather info is still syncing. When I start WU10man I don't see any Windows news app bloatware.

    1. Hello Jan, at the moment you can only disable it. On October 5, 2021, Windows 11 will be released as a free update for Windows 10. The news and interest news feed will no longer be included.
      Greetings, Stefan

  3. Thank you very much, finally that Microsoft junk is gone. I also refuse to use Edge. They make the same mistake as with Explorer. You cannot access the internet with your operating system.

  4. Great tip Stefan, thanks! I have now finally been able to disable the “news and interests” button that has been annoying me for days. It is set to “sunny” when the sun shines and “raining when it rains” and now it is set to “rain stopped” – because yes, who could have imagined this, it is no longer raining anymore…. I see all of that myself as soon as I look out the window, I really don't need a newsfeed for that...
