If you share a computer with other people, it is possible that someone may forget to log out in Windows. If you do not log out in Windows, a logged in inactive Windows user unintentionally takes up a lot of computer memory.
This computer memory is better used for people who do use the computer.
In some cases, however, a user must remain logged in, so logging out other computer users can lead to data loss.
If someone has not saved work on the computer and the computer administrator logs out that Windows user using the tips in this article, any unsaved work will be automatically lost.
2 ways to log out computer users in Windows 10
The first way to log out Windows users is to use task management in Windows 10. The second way is through it Command Prompt. I will explain both ways.
Log out Windows user via Task Manager
In the Windows search bar type: task manager. You can also right-click on the taskbar and open the Task Manager.
In Task Manager click on the tab: Users.
You will then see the remaining logged in user in Windows. Click on the user you want to log out. This username has the status “Disconnected”. Click on the username and click Log Out at the bottom.
You have now successfully logged out a logged in – inactive – user in Windows.
Log out Windows user via Command Prompt
In the Windows search bar type: Command Prompt. Then right-click on the Command Prompt result and choose Run as Administrator.
In the Command Prompt window type the following command:
query session
You will now see a list of logged in users. Check the username you want to log out. You will see your own session with the status “Active”. The other users are therefore inactive.
What you need to log out the idle computer user in the ID. You will see this ID number in the ID column. Remember this ID.
Then type the following to log out the inactive Windows user.
logoff ID, bijvoorbeeld: logoff 1
The inactive Windows user is now logged out of Windows.
I hope this helped you. Thank you for reading!
Can you also do this via another PC?
Yes, you can first use the qwista command and then logoff, read more: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/logoff
Good luck! Greetings, Stefan
