Sync tabs between Chrome, Firefox and Edge

Sync tabs between Chrome, Firefox and Edge

Each browser uses its own system to open tabs. If you are looking for a way to synchronize open tabs between different browsers, this tip will show you how to do it.

To sync tabs you need a Google account necessary and you must enter the “Session Manager tab” browser extension.

The Tab Session Manager browser extension syncs tabs between different browsers by saving activated tab data to your Google drive using the associated Google account.

Sync tabs

Install Tab Session Manager extension

The Tab Session Manager browser extension can be found in the Google Chrome Store, Firefox Add-ons Store, and the Microsoft Edge Store.

You will need to install the Tab Session Manager browser extension in each browser you wish to sync tabs with.

Once you have installed the extension, open the Chrome extension settings (I use the Chrome browser, but this is completely personal and serves as an example).

You can do this in Google Chrome by clicking on puzzle piece in the top right corner. Then click on Tab Session Manager.

open the session manager settings tab

Then click the gear icon to open the Tab Session Manager settings.

In the Session Manager settings tab, navigate down until you reach “Save device name to session”.

Enable the option and give the Device Name setting a clear, recognizable name. I would enter the computer name plus the name of the browser so that it is recognizable which tabs are being synchronized from which computer and browser. You must also set this on each browser separately via the Tab Session Manager extension.

Navigate down a bit until you reach Autosave. Enable the option: Save the session regularly to automatically synchronize the tabs between the different browsers.

Change the interval to the desired value. By default, this synchronization interval is set to 15 minutes, but if you set it to 0.1, the tabs will be synchronized constantly.

set synchronization time

Now it's time to log into your Google Account to allow the Tab Session Manager extension to access your online Google drive. This access is necessary because the sync files are placed on Google drive. If you do not grant access, the Tab Session Manager extension will not work.

Navigate down a bit until you reach Cloud Sync. Click on the blue Sign in with Google button. A new window will now open in which you must enter your Google login details. Then give permission create files on your Google drive.

If you have successfully logged in, enable the option: Automatically Sync and also enable the option: Sync auto save sessions.

Log in with google account to restore tab session

You now need to install the browser extension in another browser, for example Firefox or Microsoft Edge on another computer. Then change the option there too as indicated in the information above. If you have set everything correctly on the browser whose tabs you want to synchronize, you will see the following:

Click on the Tab Session Manager extension on the top right. Then click on the synchronization button (the cloud with the refresh button). You will then see the entered computer name “device name” and the windows that were previously opened in Google Chrome on the right. The tabs have been successfully synchronized and you can now also open them in the browser where you installed the Tab Session Manager and synchronized them via Google Drive. Click on the tab to open the tab.

  1. Hi Stephen,

I have a pressing question and I don't know if you can help me with it. I recently updated my Motorola z2 play cell phone and since then I have been experiencing all kinds of phone “problems”. One of those problems is that all the tabs I opened have “disappeared”. I write disappeared between quotes because the websites I have opened are no longer displayed in tabs (grids/mini screens). I only see an overview of the names of the various websites that I have opened, which I find very confusing and would like to see these websites in tabs again.

Do you have any idea what might have happened as a result of the update and how I can get things back to the way they were before the update?

I would greatly appreciate your response and any advice. Thank you very much in advance for your response!

    Yours faithfully,

    Caroll Christiaanse

    1. Hello, I found the following. I don't know if it is THE solution because I can't reproduce it.

If you want to go back to the tab layout, you can do so by opening a new tab in Chrome and entering it in the address bar – 'Chrome://flags'. Press the enter key when you are done. Now type 'Grid' under the search bar. This will bring up the 'Tab Grid Layout' option. Open it and press 'disable'. You will need to restart your browser twice for this to take effect.

      Success!
