Remove Bing from the Microsoft Edge browser

Bing is the default search engine in Microsoft Edge. This search engine is standard because both Bing and Microsoft Edge are Microsoft products.

Microsoft designed Bing as a search engine to compete with other major search engines like Google, and by making it the default search engine in their browser, they want to increase usage and number of users with Bing.

By integrating Bing into their own browser, Microsoft can provide a more seamless user experience and enhance their search engine and other services, such as Cortana and Office 365, promote. There are also via Bing, just like Google or Yahoo, collects user data and earns revenue through targeted advertisements.

Just like in other browser's default search engine can be changed. So you can set a different search engine in Microsoft Edge for both searches performed via the browser's address bar and via the home page. This is how you removed Bing from Microsoft Edge.

Change search engine via the address bar in Microsoft Edge

If you search via the address bar, the Bing search engine is used by default. You can change this search engine to a search engine of your choice.

Open Microsoft Edge. Click on the menu icon in the top right corner. In the menu click on “settings”. On the left in the settings, click on “privacy, search and services”.

At the very bottom of the “Services” settings, click on “Address bar and search”.

Select the desired search engine from the “Search engine used in the address bar” list.

The search engine you set here replaces the Bing search engine used when you enter a search query via the address bar.

Set up a search engine other than Bing in Microsoft Edge

In the search engine settings you can also set a different search engine instead of Microsoft Bing. To do this, click on “Manage search tools” in the “Privacy, Search & Services” settings.

Manage search programs

Click on the three horizontal dots to the right of the desired search engine, for example “Google”. In the menu, click on “Set as default”. You have now replaced Bing with Google as the search engine in the address bar.

Manage Microsoft Edge search applications

If you want to add a search engine that is not in the standard list of search engines, click on “Manage search engines”.

Manage search programs

You can now add a search engine yourself by clicking on the “add” button.

You need a “name”, a “shortcut” and a URL with %s instead of a query. It may be easier to find and install a browser extension for the search engine in question. However, this entirely depends on whether an extension is available or not.

The great thing about Microsoft Edge is that it is based on “Chromium”. In this case, this means that an extension for Google Chrome can also be installed in Microsoft Edge.

Set different search engine as homepage

If you are looking for how to set a search engine other than Bing as your homepage in the Microsoft Edge browser, you have two options.

Either you change the homepage in Microsoft Edge to the URL of the search engine or you install a browser extension that replaces the homepage with a new tab that opens the search engine.

Enter the URL of the search engine that you want to open as the homepage in the Microsoft Edge browser. If you restart Microsoft Edge, this search engine will now open as the homepage.

Check browser extensions

Finally, you should check the installed browser extensions in the Microsoft Edge browser. Sometimes when you install an extension, the search engine in Microsoft Edge is changed to Bing, even if you have set a specific search engine other than Bing. We call this “browser hijacking”. It is a method that is often used by rogue software.

Therefore, it is advisable to check all extension installed in Microsoft Edge. Do you not recognize extensions, or have you never installed an extension and yet there are extensions in the list? Then delete them all.

Open the Microsoft Edge browser. In the address bar type: edge://extensions/

Disable all extensions or click the “remove” button.

  1. My laptop has Microsoft Edge installed with search engine Bing.
I just completed all the steps above, but I can't add Google to the Address bar and search/Manage search tools page. There are several search tools in the list, but they can only be edited or deleted. I can't add them, so neither can Google.
Bing is in bold as the default setting and I can only edit it, not delete it.

    What am I doing wrong?

    1. Hello, in the settings “Manage search engines” or the URL: edge://settings/searchEngines. You will see an “Add” button to the right of “Search engines in the address bar”. Click here.
      Enter the following information:

      Search engine = Google
      Shortcut = Google.com
      URL with %s = {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchboxStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:iOSSearchLanguage}{google:prefetchSource}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:contextualSearchVersion}ie={inputEncoding}

Click “Save”. You will now see Google in the list, click on the three dots to the right of it and click on “Set as default”. Success?
      Success!

      1. Unfortunately, the 'Add' option is light gray and unclickable.
Displays 'no entry' traffic signs. Literally a ban on using that button, it seems.

        1. Here are some possible solutions. Let me summarize them.

          1. Check that your computer is not in “S mode”.
          2. Check and disable all extensions in Edge, url: edge://extensions/
          3. Is it yours? Not from an employer, company or school? Sometimes a browser is managed remotely via a policy, check via url: edge://policy/. In that case, please contact the administrator.

Read the link above for more information. Good luck!

  2. Good afternoon,

I have a question about Microsoft Family Safety. I had an account, and my son's account was managed through it. Just like through Family link. I disconnected both systems, so that he no longer has to ask permission to download or open programs. So I can no longer access anything, not in fmaily link and there is no 'family' in Microsoft anymore.
A program for the ROC needs to be installed on my son's new laptop. The portal for talent. This works. The only thing is that a kind of working environment for the hotel he is going to has been created through that portal. This works with teams, among other things. If you click this, you will immediately receive a message that a parent must give permission for this. I would then receive an email with a permission option. First of all, I don't want that, but because the groups no longer exist, it is not possible. I think I have looked at all the safety and security options, but I can't get it done. Do you perhaps have an idea?
PS: Teams as a separate app does work, and it can access (part?) of the learning environment.
    Kind regards, Karin
