How to look up computer model or serial number in Windows 11/10

On a Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer, knowing the model number of your computer or laptop can be helpful in a few scenarios. For example, you want to upgrade your system component (memory, hard drive, display or power supply).

With the model number you can search the Internet for a suitable replacement. If your PC is not working and you want to solve the problem, you need technical support. It is useful to keep track of the equipment inventory.

Many computer manufacturers usually place a sticker with this information on your laptop or desktop. Apart from that, Windows 11/10 offers at least two ways to find the model number and serial number, also called a “service tag,” of your computer or laptop. Using System Information or Windows PowerShell in Windows 11, you can quickly find the serial number or service tag. This is how it works.

Look up computer model via System Information

If you open system information in Windows you will see a lot of specifications and information about your computer and connected hardware. This way you can also look up the model of your computer through system information.

To find the computer model, right-click on the Start button. Click Run in the menu. In the run window type: msinfo32

System Information will now open. On the left, click System and check the model of your computer in the “System Model” information.

Look up computer serial number via PowerShell

Windows PowerShell is an object-oriented shell and scripting language for Microsoft Windows. You can find out certain settings, including the serial number of your computer, by entering commands.

Right-click on the Start button. Click Windows Terminal (Admin) in the menu. Then click on the down arrow in the title bar and choose “Windows PowerShell”.

  1. Best ….
I have a challenge. I've done a lot of searching on Google, but I'd like to put it in front of you.
A Lenovo laptop ceased to exist. Completely dead. I opened up this laptop and took out the RAM and SDD. Who knows.
A few weeks later, another Acer laptop dies. No Bootable device message. SSD appears to be defective after I replaced the SSD from the Lenovo in the Acer.
    Completed Windows installation completely.
Now the laptop keeps asking for Windows activation.
Not surprising of course because I use an SSD with Windows 10 product key in a different hardware configuration. I can no longer retrieve this key as the SSD has died.
How do I activate the SSD/W10 (Lenovo) on the Acer laptop hardware.
If you have any tips, I'd love to hear them.
    Thank you in advance.

      1. Stefan, thank you for your quick response and solutions. The problem was that Windows could not activate because a Windows 10 Pro installation was active on a machine on which a Win10 Home was previously active. Complete new installation done in accordance with your description and… Windows activated.
        Thanks again. John.
