In Windows 11 you can let Windows determine when the hard drive should be turned off automatically.
By letting Windows determine when the hard drive should be turned off after inactivity, you can save energy on AC power or the battery. Automatically turning off the hard drive only works on a hard drive and not on an SSD (NVME) or other type of drive.
Saving energy is an advantage, but for certain apps there is also a disadvantage. Some apps may respond slower, especially in the beginning Windows the hard drive needs to be brought back from “sleep mode” (idle).
Let Windows 11 determine when the hard drive turns off
To automatically put the hard drive into sleep mode, open the Control Panel. Click on “Hardware and Sound”.
Then, in “Power Management”, click “Edit Power Plan”.
In the power plan settings, click on “Change advanced power settings”.
Then click on “Hard Drive” and open “Turn off hard drive after”. You will now see two options that you can set. Set the desired minutes after which the hard drive will automatically switch off on battery or mains power.
