  1. Good afternoon, I am installing Windows 10. I made the wrong language choice during installation. I have it set to Dutch instead of American. Now I cannot find the @ during installation and I cannot get any further because I have to enter my @mail address. enter
    HELP
    Kind regards, Aad

    1. Hello Aad, you can always choose to step back during installation. A monkey tail with a QWERTY Dutch keyboard types by just clicking on the key next to the “1”, the left key. The key looks like “§”. If that no longer works, you will need to adjust the keyboard layout.

Click on the start button. Click on Settings, click on Language on the left. Then click Add under “preferred languages” or click on the current language and then on Options. Under keyboards you can add a keyboard layout. Then press ALT+SHIFT and then hold down ALT. Select the newly added keyboard layout.

      Good luck! Greetings, Stefan

  2. Hello Stefan,

I bought a new laptop for my wife. Windows 10 Home in Dutch and Azerty keyboard. I now want to download and install Russian as the default language, but I would also like all folders in Explorer to keep a Dutch name and not change to Russian. In the programs she uses, everything should be in Russian. How do I do that?
First set Russian as the default language and then install the programs? Or does that not matter?
I already have keyboard stickers to put the Russian letters on the keys.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marc

    1. Hi Marc, as far as I know this doesn't work. The letter will be replaced by Russian, including the specific folder names. The apps generally adopt the installed Windows language. However, this varies per app. Greetings, Stefan

      1. A Dutch-language W10 was installed at the start, so does it then change completely to Russian?
I see Dutch, English and Russian folder names mixed up on her old laptop. She used the laptop in three different languages simultaneously by adjusting the keyboard via shortcut. The original Windows installed was in English on her old laptop.
Maybe I'll have to experiment a bit myself...

        1. Hi Marc, yes what is at all? No, standard folders such as Documents etc do not change, I don't think so, not sure... New folders that are created do, and some standard folders such as “Windows” and subfolders do not either. I suspect that's why you see the mix of these three languages. It is also a “display language” We cannot adjust this either so unfortunately we have to make do with it 🙂 The only thing you can do is if you want to completely adjust everything to Russian is to install Windows 10 Russian, after a backup to have made up important files. You can simply download this. This saves a considerable amount of time than adapting everything to Russian, which may not be completely successful. Good luck with your choice!
          Greetings, Stefan

          1. Thank you! It becomes clear. 🙂
The default folders have indeed not changed. The self-added folders do.
            Regards,
            Marc

  3. Hi Stefan, thanks for the clear article!

I'm just running into a problem... Windows is in Dutch and I want English. The store says that English is installed, but in the settings where I can choose the display language, only Dutch is in the dropdown menu.

    What to do?

  4. Dear Stephen,
I have changed the Windows language from Dutch to English US, but no matter what I do, the login screen shows Welcome instead of Welcome.
Do you have any idea how this is possible?

I am using the latest Windows Version 20H2

    1. Hello Rene, I found this information: https://blog.techinline.com/2016/03/29/how-to-change-the-language-of-welcome-screen-in-windows-10/. I also tested it immediately and it is not possible - no matter what I try - to get the word "Welcome" in English. I can't do it either, everything has been translated except this word. Unfortunately not possible, this word “Welcome” is probably ingrained in the Windows installation language. Even if you restore Windows, the original language will remain as installed, i.e. in Dutch. Unfortunately. Even if I add a new account via English, it is created with a Dutch “Welcome” and “Log Out” text in the login screen. Greetings, Stefan
