If you use YouTube, you know that advertisements are displayed and that YouTube presents recommendations for new videos or similar videos based on our search history.
These recommendations are mainly made on the search history linked to our Google account. If you log in to YouTube via a Google account, the recommendations, advertisements and related videos are better tailored to your preferences.
That's because search history keeps track of exactly what you search for on YouTube. This information is processed by Google and new videos are presented based on the outcome in the algorithm.
You can manage search history via your Google account. This way you can enable or disable search history. This is how it works.
Turn YouTube search history on or off
To enable or disable search history, open the “My Activity” Google settings via: https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity
If you are logged in with your Google account, you can directly edit YouTube's search history.
Turn on YouTube search history
To enable YouTube search history, click on “YouTube history”.
Then click the “Enable” button to enable search history.
YouTube history stores the YouTube videos you watch and listen to, as well as the items you search for on YouTube.
If you use your device without an internet connection, your data may be saved to your account once you are back online.
Not all Google services store this information in your account.
This data allows Google to provide you with more personalized features, such as making better recommendations, suggesting creators you might like, remembering where you left off when you resume a video, and showing relevant ads both on and off Google.
This data may be stored and used in any Google service you are logged in to provide you with more personalized features. On account.google.com You can, among other things, delete your data manually, choose an automatic deletion option and stop data storage.
Confirm again by clicking the “Enable” button.
Turn off YouTube search history
Open the YouTube search history setup as described above. Then click the “Disable” button to stop the search history.
Pausing YouTube history may limit or disable more personalized features in Google services. For example, you will no longer see content or creator recommendations based on videos you watch or search after you pause this setting. You may also get recommendations for videos you've already watched.
This setting will be interrupted on all sites, apps and devices logged in with this Google account.
Interrupting this setting will not delete your previous data. You can view or delete your data and more at myactivity.google.com.
Go to account.google.com to change these and other settings of your Google account. Visit policies.google.com for more information about the data Google continues to collect and why.
Click “Pause” to disable YouTube search history.
