Allow installation of apps from any source in Windows 11

Allow installation of apps from any source in Windows 11

Since Windows 8, a Microsoft Store has been present in Windows, including in Windows 11. The installation of apps has so far only been limited to apps from the Microsoft Store.

To install apps without the Microsoft Store, you must enable the option “apps can be installed from any source, including individual files”.

This is not about separate installation files, but about apps. Just like Apple and Android, apps are tested in the Microsoft Store. If the app has been tested and found suitable for a specific Windows version, then this app will appear in the Microsoft Store.

If it is the case that one app is deprecated then you can use this app so do not find it via the Microsoft Store and do not install it either. By enabling this option it is possible to install these apps and individual files. This is how it works.

Allow installation of apps from any source in Windows 11

Right-click on the Start button. Click on Settings in the menu. Then click on “Privacy & Security” on the left. In the security options click on “for developers”.

for developer settings in windows 11

Then enable the option “apps can be installed from any source, including individual files”.

apps can be installed from any source, including individual files

You will see the following message. Accept this message with “Yes”.

"By the developer mode including installing and running apps from outside the Microsoft Store, your device and your personal information may be exposed to security risks or your device may be damaged.

Use developer components

You have now enabled developer mode and can now install apps from outside the Microsoft Store on your Windows 11 computer.

  1. Same problem as above. Want to install the PrivadoVPN app, but ms does not allow this. Under Enable Developer Mode, I turned the option on and even restarted my laptop. When I want to install the app, the same Microsoft window appears with the same message.
My laptop works with windows 11 home.
    Any idea for a solution?

    1. Hallo, I suspect “S mode”. Read more here: https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/windows/veelgestelde-vragen-over-windows-10-en-windows-11-in-s-modus-851057d6-1ee9-b9e5-c30b-93baebeebc85
S-mode is also available in Windows 11 Home, to avoid confusion.
Read here how to switch off S mode, please note; this is permanent: https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/windows/s-modus-uitschakelen-in-windows-4f56d9be-99ec-6983-119f-031bfb28a307
      Success!

  2. Hi,
Same for me, all steps done, but can only install from Microsoft Store.
Also in apps - advanced app settings - choose where you want to download apps / there is no option to actually do this. It is an Asus laptop with Windows 11. I am curious about a solution 🙂

    1. Hello, I suspect you have installed Windows 11 S mode on your ASUS laptop. An “S mode” installation cannot be restored to a normal Windows 11 version without first removing everything and reinstalling it from USB. For example, in S mode you can only install apps from the Microsoft Store. In S mode there is no option to install apps yourself via installation programs, etc. In general, laptops with S mode are purchased this way. Here you can read more:

If you don't know how to install the normal version without removing everything via USB, you can use this guide:

      Success!

  3. Good afternoon,
I followed the steps above to download all apps on my windows, but it still shows that it is protected. Do you have any idea what else could be causing this and what else I could do?
    Regards,
    Carmen
