View data usage for network or internet in Windows 10

In Windows 10 or Windows 11 you can gain insight into the total network or internet data consumption over a period of 30 days.

Data usage is shown based on the network adapter. For example, a distinction is made between the consumption of an Ethernet (cable) network adapter or a WiFi adapter.

Suppose you want to have insight into how much data you use per month via your device, then you can gain insight into the network and internet settings. This is standard Windows functionality and is enabled by default.

Unfortunately, the data consumption via the Windows settings is not as extensive as specific software, but it offers a quick and clear insight into the total data consumption specified per app or adapter.

Gaining insight into data usage has several advantages. This helps to gain insight into your average data consumption over a certain period over several months. It also helps you to see per application how the application is used. If you suspect that a particular application is using a lot of data, you should see this reflected in the data usage specified by application.

If necessary, in the event of a cyber attack or suspicion of a cyber attack, you can gain insight into certain trends by keeping reports on network trends and average data consumption.
