Google Chrome automatically clears history on exit

If you share a computer with other people, or are otherwise concerned about people seeing your browsing history, you can have Google Chrome automatically clear your browsing history on exit.

Automatically clearing browser history, download history or cookies can help ensure your privacy. It also helps to optimize security and improve browser performance.

Keep in mind that automatic erasure is convenient, but it is not a comprehensive solution for privacy and security. Some cookies and trackers can still collect data. Also, automatic data deletion may impair certain web experiences, for example by logging you out of websites or removing certain website settings.

Automatically clearing history in Google Chrome is not a standard feature available through the settings. You will need to edit the Windows registry to do this. If necessary, make a backup of the registry first.

In this guide I explain step by step how this works. To begin open the Windows registry. Go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies

Right-click on “Policies” and click “New” and then key. Name this new key “Google”.

Now click on the newly created “Google” key and click on “New” and then on key. Name this key “Chrome”.

Now click on the newly created “Chrome” key and click on “New” and then on key. Name this key “ClearBrowsingDataOnExitList”.

Now we're going to create a string value. Right-click on the “ClearBrowsingDataOnExitList” key. Now click on “New” and then on “String Value”. Name this string value “1”. Double click on it and change the value data to “browsing_history”. Click OK.

Now when you close the Google Chrome browser, the browser history will be deleted automatically. This happens again and again.

You can also do this for the download history and/or for cookies and other site data.

To do this, create the string value “2” with value data “download_history” and string value “3” with value data “cookies_and_other_site_data”.

If you no longer need it, right-click on the “ClearBrowsingDataOnExitList” key and click “delete”.

I hope this helped you. Thank you for reading!

  1. Dear sir,
After I updated Microsoft Edge, my laptop suddenly became incredibly slow. Chrome no longer works, so it does not open and opening a site with Edge, for example my digital newspaper, keeps taking time. The opened site keeps running.
    I'm running Windows 10.
Please help me before I fall into depression. 🙂
    Kind regards and many thanks.
    Willy

    1. Hello, it seems to me that after an update in Edge your computer suddenly becomes slow. That said, I recommend reinstalling Google Chrome. After this, restart your computer. This is the only thing you can do if you have no idea why your computer is 'suddenly' slower. Good luck!

      1. The response is certainly much faster than my laptop; Requesting an article in Edge also takes a lot of patience. I will answer and read this on another laptop of course.

Reinstalling Chrome also takes a lot of time.

My feeling is that something is going wrong with the internet connection, but I don't know where to start.

        Regards,
        Willy

        1. Hallo,

To investigate possible problems with the Internet, start with a speed test. This allows you to test the current speed of your internet connection. You can do this at
          https://speedtest.net/

If there is a delay, always contact your internet provider. The helpdesk can help you identify the problem. If you suspect that the problem is in Windows 10 itself, you can restore Windows, but keep in mind that you will lose programs and settings because you will then be reinstalling Windows. Some technical knowledge is required.

Sometimes it is due to a virus on your computer that slows it down more and more. You can check your computer for viruses and remove them for free with Malwarebytes.
          https://www.pc-tips.info/tips/malware/alles-wat-u-wilt-weten-over-malwarebytes-uitgebreide-informatie/

I recommend you start with Malwarebytes, then check your internet speed. If the problem is not resolved, consider restoring your computer.

          Good luck, kind regards.
