When you use the sleep mode completely, Windows will no longer use a “hiberfil.sys” file.
The hiberfil.sys file is normally used to save the current state of the system when you put your computer to sleep.
Hibernation is a power-saving state in which the current session (including open applications and documents) is saved to the hard drive instead of RAM, so you can completely shut down the computer to save power and resume your session later. This is also called hybrid sleep mode or hibernation mode.
If you has little writing space available of sleep mode causes problems on your computer, then you can disable hiberfil.sys. This is how it works.
Disable Hiberfil.sys file in Windows 11 or 10
To get started, open a Command Prompt as an administrator. In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:
powercfg.exe -h off
By disabling hibernation with powercfg -h off command, this option will no longer be available and you can also save some disk space as the hiberfil.sys file will be deleted.
To find out how much disk space the hibernate file is taking up on your computer, do the following:
- Open the settings.
- In the settings click on “System”.
- Then click on “Storage”.
- Click on “show more categories”.
- Now click on “System and reserved”.
- You will now see the “Hibernate File” with reserved disk space.
Now restart your computer to disable the hiberfil.sys (hibernate file). Please note that sleep mode no longer works.
