Recover file or folder with ShadowExplorer

Windows creates a Windows restore point when installing software, installing a driver and with certain Windows updates. A Windows restore point contains all files and folders.

If you Windows restore point then you can choose in Windows to restore a full restore point. By default, Windows does not allow you to restore only a specific file or folder.

A restore point in Windows is also called a Shadow Copy. There is software that can open this Shadow Copy or a Windows restore point. So it is possible to recover and restore a specific file or folder using this software.

Shadow copies are a concept first introduced in Windows Server 2003. It works by Windows periodically scanning the system and looking for file changes since the last search and recording the changes. These changes are indexed and stacked on top of each other, creating a history of the file or folder.

This process was then added to the Windows Vista operating system under the System Restore feature, where it is used to this day. The technology is the basis of the functionality of the previous Windows versions.

Restoring a specific file or folder from a Windows restore point is useful if, for example, you accidentally delete or overwrite a file. This is how you can recover a file or folder from a Windows restore point with ShadowExplorer.
