Enable voice announcements on Mac

Stefan

Apple has cleverly incorporated special accessibility features to make using a Mac easier for users with disabilities. The spoken material feature is designed to assist users with visual impairments.

The idea is that the Mac announces all incoming notifications, so that the user stays well informed about notifications. We can use this feature to our advantage and make sure we don't miss any important notifications.

Enable voice announcement on Mac

Click on it at the top left Apple-icon. Click System Preferences in the menu. Then click on Accessibility.

Click on Spoken material in the menu on the left.

At the top you can select the System voice for all voice commands. Click the Play button to hear the computer voice (Xander). You can adjust this voice by clicking “Customize”. You can adjust the speaking speed if necessary.

Enable the following option: Speak announcements. You have a number of additional speaking commands you can enable, namely speak selection, speak items under pointer, and speak feedback while typing.

Click the Options button to change the voice commands. You have additional options here to further modify the specific voice command. Each of the above voice commands has other specific options. The options for speaking messages are the voice, the sentence that should be spoken and any delay that should be initiated before the message is spoken.
