Previous Uninstall Windows installation in Windows 11

Have you recently upgraded Windows 10 to Windows 11? Then you may have noticed that your primary drive is taking up more disk space.

This is because the files and folders from the previous Windows installation are stored in the “Windows.old” folder under the Windows installation drive. When you upgrade your operating system from lower to higher, for example from Windows 10 to Windows 11; The “Windows.old” folder is automatically created.

This Windows.old folder stores all the information from the previous version of Windows, so if you want your PC restore to previous state, you can go back within ten days of installing the newer Windows operating system. I recently added an article to explain the extendable for 10 days.

The Windows.old folder is safe to delete. It saves a lot of disk space. However, you must be sure that you want to delete this folder. If you ever want to go back to the previous Windows installation, you will no longer be able to do so after removing Windows.old. So make a well-considered choice.

You're missing the option, but that's because I'm working on a virtual machine. Here you will find the setting.

Then click the Clean button. Disk space is now freed up by the previous Windows installation files to delete.

I hope this helped you. Thank you for reading!

  1. thanks for your solution to remove windows old from windows 11.
but I still have a question, do you happen to know how I can place my media player (VLC) back under the right mouse button?
because you now have to click on more and more options in Windows 11 to get to VLC player.
maybe a nice challenge for you, I don't know anymore, good luck.

    Thanks in advance Bert
