Reopen Safari tabs when starting Safari (Mac)

Safari is the web browser for Mac users. When you start Safari by default, a new tab page will open. Open tabs in Safari always close when you quit Safari.

By Restore Safari tabs when you start Safari you can pick up where you left off. It sometimes happens that macOS needs to restart or that a certain app forces macOS to restart. This is annoying because it causes you to lose the open active tabs in Safari.

If you want Safari to open the last opened tabs again, you can set this up as follows.

Reopen Safari tabs at startup

Open the Safari web browser. In the Safari menu, click Preferences.

Safari preferences

Click on the General tab and click: Open Safari with.

Open Safari with

Change the settings to: All windows from last session.

Now every time you use the Safari browser opens on your Mac, the last opened tabs will be restored and you can continue what you were doing.

Open Safari with all windows from last session

I hope this helped you. Thank you for reading!

  1. Hi Stefan, I have set all this up like this, restarted my laptop, tried another browser (firefox), in my system preferences -> general the option 'close windows when stopping an app' is not selected, and I still get the error every time. lost all tabs. Do you have any idea what I could do about this? I have Big Sur 11.6.2 on it and Safari 14.1.2
    Thanks in advance, Greetings Gerrit

      1. Thank you for your answer, it certainly seems that way. After a lot of puzzling I finally found the 3 files that need to be restored. I just can't fix that yet. do you have any ideas about that?

        1. It says that you need to restore it from a backup eg time machine backup. Otherwise I wouldn't know how to get those files. This is not basic functionality, if it doesn't work I wouldn't spend too much time taking a detour. Greetings, Stefan

  2. Thanks Stefan!

I'm new to Mac, but this doesn't work for me. I have a new MacBook Air and find this quite annoying. I've already tried everything.
