If you have a limited internet plan, Windows 11 lets you monitor your data usage and receive warnings before you exceed limits.
Although most internet providers give you unlimited internet access, you may still come across services that offer a limited amount of internet data each month.
When you use a data plan with a limit, you can use the “Data usage” feature that Windows 11 offers.
This function is specially designed to monitor the data consumption of the connection during a certain cycle. You can also configure limits to get alerts to ensure you don't exceed the allowed amount of data.
View data usage per app in Windows 11
To view data usage, right-click on the start button. Click on Settings in the menu. Click on Network & Internet on the left and click on Advanced network settings at the bottom. In the more settings click on Data usage.
In this overview you can see the data consumption per application over the past 30 days. At the top right you can select an internet adapter such as Ethernet for a cable connection or Wi-Fi for a wireless connection.
If you click Enter limit, you can set a data limit. You can set a limit type for a monthly, one-time or unlimited period. Most services offer a monthly data limit.
You can then indicate how many months it will take before the data limit needs to be reset. Finally, you indicate the data limit. This is the actual limit of data you wish to set. You can set this data limit for an x number of Megabytes or Gigabytes.
If you have set a data limit, you will immediately see what percentage you have used and how many days it will take until the limit is reset. You can edit or delete the limit.
Some apps can limit data usage if a data limit is set. You can enable this “connection with data limit” option to reduce the data consumption of certain apps.
If necessary, you can reset the data usage at the very bottom. You then set all data usage values to 0 to start counting again.
To do this, click on the Reset button in the Data usage settings.
