In Windows 11 you can create a add folder to start menu, or simply add a shortcut to the start menu. However, there is no function to add a file to the Start menu.

If you right-click on a file, you will not see “Pin to Start” in the context menu. There is a way to pin a file to the start menu in Windows 11. You can read how this works in this article.

This way you can pin an Excel document, a Word document or a text file to the Start menu. We all use certain files several times a day, going to the location of the file each time takes a lot of unnecessary time. Pinning the file to the Start menu can offer a solution.

To start, create a shortcut of the file in question. Right-click the file, then click “show more options” and then click copy to (desktop) create shortcut. A shortcut will appear on the desktop.

Then open Windows Explorer. In the address bar type:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Copy the shortcut from the desktop and paste it into this folder. You can also drag the shortcut to the window.

Then click on the Start menu. Then click on “All apps” at the top right.

In the list of apps, find the shortcut you added earlier. Right-click on the shortcut and click “Pin to Start”.

You now see in it Startmenu in the “Pinned” section at the bottom that the file shortcut has been added to the Start menu.
