Over time, Microsoft has developed various techniques to authenticate a user. A local account, a Microsoft account or a fingerprint, an password or a PIN code can be used to log in.
To log in with these options, the user must enter a password. In Windows 10 or Windows 11, a local user account must be created, without the need for a password. This means that even if the user does not know the password, he or she can easily access and use the computer.
Setting a minimum password length for a local user account allows a password to be added to an account.
Add minimum password length in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Click the magnifying glass in the taskbar in Windows 11 or click the search box in the taskbar in Windows 10. In the search box type: Command Prompt. Right-click on the Command Prompt result and click “Run as Administrator”.
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command to force a minimum password length in Windows 10 or Windows 11.
replace this with a number. For example 12
net accounts /minpwlen:<minimalewachtwoordlengte>
The command then becomes
net accounts /minpwlen:12
You have now set a minimum password length for all local user accounts in Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If you change the number to “0” the minimum password length will be reset to default values. There is then no active policy that requires a minimum number of characters for a password.
